The iNicosia project, at its current iteration, aims to create a 3D photogrammetric reconstruction of the Old Town of Nicosia along with the main commercial arteries. Below is a general overview of the pipeline.
Define the Grid
Our primary methodology involved breaking up Nicosia into organic cellular blocks to best accommodate the continuous, building structure layout which characterizes the City.
Risk Assessment and Mapping
A series of assessment maps were created to provide a planning framework for the photo capturing of the City. We located heavily populated areas, schools, tall buildings and more, which helped us identify potential issues and aided in resolving potential issues.
Asset Categorization
A categorization framework was developed due to the complexity and enormity of the project:
- Block Out Assets: Building block to begin capturing the City
- Hero Assets: Cultural heritage sites, landmarks, nationally and internationally recognizable structures
- Secondary Assets: In between buildings, road facing structures, buildings situated in densely trafficked areas
- Tertiary Assets: Distance or background buildings, structures which will be viewed from a bird’s eye view, structures which are situated within building structures or are not immediately visible or are situated in quiet streets
Capture Methodology
Depending on the asset category we proceeded with the necessary means of data capture for the 3D reconstruction, using aerial capture, terrestrial photogrammetry, and laser scanning.
3D Reconstruction
Following the data capture we proceeded in creating the City model using photogrammetry and 3D software
